NORWICH — The American Legion Auxiliary Post 189 welcomed their newly elected president on Monday.

Sophie Liberatore, current president, passed on her gavel to incoming president Marsha Cornelius. Liberatore has served as president for the last five years, and in the past has held other positions at the Legion.

"I've been president for five years. Before that I was secretary and different vices. I've held a lot of different positions here," said Liberatore.

Cornelius, the newly appointed president and lifetime Chenango County resident, said while nervous, she was glad to take the role, and did so as an honor to her father, a World War II veteran.

"I'm anxious but I'm excited for it," said Cornelius. "My dad was in the Legion, and he was in the armed services and he was in World War II and the navy. So I just thought that was, you know, I'd do him an honor by being here."

The president of the American Legion Auxiliary is responsible for running the meetings, and attending a convention in the summer, according to Liberatore.

"We run the unit meetings, we're responsible for making sure officers do what they're supposed to do," said Liberatore. "The president is also responsible for going to convention in July, and this year it's in Albany but it's restricted to only 100 people because of COVID. But normally we have a whole 300 ladies from New York State that go to the convention."

The American Legion Auxiliary serves as a support for veterans and their families, according to Liberatore. They participate in parades, fundraising, and youth programs.

"We march in the parades for Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and we support the children and youth, give out scholarships to the graduating seniors," said Liberatore. "We try to do things with our junior members like rock painting, we want to do a paint and sip with them, only instead of 'sip' we'll call it a paint and snack."

Liberatore also explained that they assist in selling poppies made by veterans as a way to raise money to support veterans across the nation.

"The veterans make them, and then we pass them out and get donations and then that money goes to help veterans everywhere," said Liberatore. "We've raised a lot of money, not so much in this post, but within New York State. And that goes back to the veterans, that's what it's all about."
