NORWICH — Greater Norwich Foundation trustees gathered with scholarship recipients Monday to award the 2021 scholarship funds.

In the 2021 fiscal year, the foundation awarded scholarships to 15 students, totaling over $100,000. The Greater Norwich Foundation also provided $383,000 to various non-profit organizations within the community.

The Greater Norwich Foundation was founded in 1965, with the intention of giving back to the community, according to Greater Norwich Foundation Chairman James Dunne.

"The idea was that there were probably people in Norwich who would like to leave money to the community, but they felt like they didn't have enough. So it was set up so people could leave money to it, and it didn't have to be a whole lot, but it built up from there," he said.

Dunne said anyone can donate to the foundation, and it will be re-dispersed as scholarships. He added that some of the donations are in memory of students who have passed.

"There are a couple who are in memory of former students who were killed, and so we try to actually provide more money for scholarships than people left with that intention," said Dunne. "The foundation is now at a level of maybe 9 million dollars."

Officials said the foundation currently offers seven different scholarships as well as unspecified grant money.

"Scholarships offered by the Foundation include the Clara Robbins Memorial Scholarships, the Marcia Stewart Memorial Scholarship, the Esther C. Flanagan Scholarship, the Thomas H. Ivory Scholarship, the H. William Smith Jr. Technical Scholarship, the Robert N. Endries Scholarship, the Edward J. Lee Law Scholarship, and some additional unspecified grant money," said Greater Norwich Foundation officials.

By completing and turning in the application, students will be considered for six scholarships, with the exception being the Lee Law Scholarship, according to foundation officials.

"The completion of one application will entitle the applicant to be considered for all The Greater Norwich Foundation scholarships with the exception of the Lee Law Scholarship. Applications for the scholarships may be obtained from the Norwich High School Guidance Office with the exception of the Lee Law Scholarship, which can be acquired through the NBT Bank Wealth Management Division," said officials.

Dunne said the criteria for each scholarship varies, and final decisions are made by a scholarship committee who look at grades and extracurricular activities, information on the application, and the optional essay.

"There are different criteria depending on what scholarship it is," Dunne said. "It's not always need, it's not always highest marks."

"The essay is optional. If they really want the scholarship, they'd be advised to write an essay. But we have their marks, we have what activities they're involved in, all that information," he added.

Students interested in applying for the scholarships can find an application at the Norwich High School Guidance Office. The only exception is the Lee Law Scholarship; applications can be obtained through the NBT Bank Wealth Management Division.
