Norwich mayor rescinds Youth Bureau application, council restarts hiring process
NORWICH — Norwich Mayor Shawn Sastri has officially withdrawn his application for Youth Bureau Director, after council members tabled the decision to hire him at a council meeting earlier this month.
"I just felt like with the council tabling it, it just felt like the support wasn't there. So I just felt I would finish my term out as mayor," said Sastri.
Alderman Matthew Caldwell said since Sastri has withdrawn his application, the council will begin accepting applications once again, and restarting the hiring process.
"He had made us aware that he was withdrawing his application for the position, and so at this point where things stand from a legislative perspective, two weeks ago at the special common council meeting we made a motion to table the appointment. We’ll have to take that off the table and put it back to the floor for a vote," Caldwell explained.
He said new information led the council to take more time to consider appointing Sastri as Youth Bureau Director.
"There was a lot of discussion and input from a variety of people and we wanted to take that into consideration before we moved forward. That's really the reason we did it that way," said Caldwell.
"We are soliciting applications and kind of restarting the process," he added.
