NEW BERLIN – American Legion Post 348 is welcoming Kevin Phillips as the new scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 61.

Troop 61 meets every week at the American Legion on 6 Academy Street. Their first fall campout is on September 25, and ends the next day.

Phillips is the director of International Leadership Development USA, an organization that has supported missionary groups such as J-Life Africa.

Phillips has also been involved with Boy Scout Troop 5 of Harlem, New York while getting his doctorate at Columbia University and has previously served as a scoutmaster in Wheaton, Illinois.

Phillips began as a cub scout in New Berlin. He later became an eagle scout when he joined Troop 61. He became one of the highest ranked scouts in the United States, allowing him to be a scoutmaster when he was 18 years old.

This required his church to ask the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America special permission for Phillips to have the position, as scoutmasters are usually required to be above the age of 21.

He has also served as an independent missionary, building a church in Peru while in high school and regularly stopping in other countries such as Australia, France and South Africa.

“I love the model for scouting right now. ‘Prepared for life,' as I look at how my boys in Harlem are often times the very first college graduates in their family, how they’re exposed to stuff outside of their little enclave of school and home by scouting and given all of these skills like cooking or personal finance, the curriculum has been developed over these 110 years. It has brought essential skills to be prepared for life,” said Phillips.

Phillips also discussed how scouting helps boys develop various skills that prepare them for adulthood. He stresses the importance of male youth engaging in scouting activities.

"Scouting is the best option for parents wanting to get their boys off the screen; away from the computer, television, telephone, and video games. The youth of New Berlin deserve the many opportunities for adventure, service, personal growth, and fun that scouting provides.”
