GERMAN – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office recently executed a no-knock search warrant in the Town of German, leading to the capture of an alleged drug dealer along with numerous guns, drugs, and more than $3,600 in cash.
According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, Jonas M. Whaley, 36, of German was arrested after members of the Broome-Chenango-Endicott SWAT team executed a no-knock search warrant at approximately 5:30 a.m. on September 21 at a residence located at 3157 County Road 2 in the Town of German.
Cutting said police found approximately four ounces of methamphetamine along with 13 long guns, including two AR15’s with 30 round magazines and four pistols.
“This warrant was the result of a long-term investigation that started off in February of this year, and we were concerned about the information we had received describing numerous guns, which we ended up finding in the residence.”
He said several of the firearms were recovered fully-loaded with rounds in the chamber. He added that two of the guns recovered were “ghost guns,” meaning they are unserialized and untraceable firearms, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition were recovered along with over $3,600 in cash.
“We don’t know where these guns came from, but we’ve got a functional AR-15 styled rifle and a handgun that can’t be tracked,” said Cutting. “That’s concerning because you hear on the news that most of these ghost guns are out in the midwest, but now we’ve got two of them found right here in Chenango County.”
Cutting said law enforcement located Whaley within a bedroom and that he attempted to flush methamphetamine down his toilet. He added that methamphetamine was recovered from the bathroom as well as scattered throughout the room he was located in.
He added that Whaley is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, an A felony, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a D felony, tampering with physical evidence, an E felony, and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.
“We’ve got a lot of guns, ammo, drugs, and cash in this case,” Cutting said. “The suspect currently has four or five other charges in other jurisdictions, but unfortunately he’ll receive an appearance ticket and be on his way.”
“When you have violent crimes, and serious drug offenders or dealers like this - they really don’t care about society, those are the people they’re hurting.”
Cutting said the hard work and cooperation from agencies including the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and Endicott Police Department helped make the arrest possible.
He said Whaley was arraigned in the Town of Norwich/German Court and was remanded without bail on the A-II Felony, pending court action in Chenango County Court.
