CV Warriors stun Purple Tornado on the gridiron
BINGHAMTON- Talk about flipping the script and stunning the audience, the one-win Chenango Valley Warriors defeated the #9 ranked Norwich Purple Tornado on Friday night by a final score of 20-6 in a late-season Section IV Class C upset.
“We got outplayed. It was pretty evident…CV played a good game and they executed better than us” said Norwich Head Coach Mike Chrystie on the Tornado’s loss. “They ran the midline pretty well, it can be tough to defend…their quarterback (Donovan Tomm) got away from us a couple plays and that was the deciding factor defensively.”
Tomm specifically was relied on heavily by the Warriors as he averaged 12.5 yards per carry as he amassed a total of 175 rushing yards on the night. One of the most important plays Tomm made was an 80 yard touchdown run with 10:59 remaining in the contest to create a two-score game, but in the process also created the game’s final margin of victory.
However, to Chenango Valley’s credit, their game plan was much more than just a one-man band. The Warriors jumped on the Tornado early- igniting to a 10-0 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter via a Carter Klein one-yard TD run and a successful 31-yard field goal attempt by Caleb Barkwell.
The Tornado responded in the second period with a 63 yard touchdown run by Holden Ryan, cutting CV’s lead to 10-6 and kick Norwich back within striking distance at the conclusion of the first-half.
In the second half however, the Warriors went back to the scoring ways they had exhibited in the opening quarter of the game. With 5:50 left to play in the third quarter, Caleb Barkwell successfully put a 27 yard field-goal through the uprights making the score 13-6 in favor of Chenango Valley.
Warrior quarterback Donovan Tomm capped off the victory with the aforementioned 80 yard rushing touchdown to put the game on ice for Chenango Valley.
Notably, the Warrior’s defense caused severe problems for the Tornado which resulted in a series of stagnant rushing and passing plays.
“They (Chenango Valley) did a great job stopping our between the tackle plays. Anything inside the tackle box, they made it very difficult for us…we just couldn’t get anything started in between the tackles…they were the more aggressive team,” added Chrystie.
The uncharacteristically sporadic offense of Norwich further contributed to the difficulty of finding the endzone as the Purple weren’t able to find their patented headstrong-methodical offensive rhythm.
Norwich’s usual suspects when it comes to running the ball- Mallachi Gaters, Torin Lawrence and Evan Sylstra were all viewed as the main targets by the CV defense. Fortunately for the Warriors, their game plan worked to perfection as the typical three-headed rushing monster combined for a mere 66 yards rushing in the game.
“Offensively, we just never got in a true rhythm the whole game. Never really established our running game. I don’t think it’s any secret that we want to be able to run the ball this year whether it’s Torin, Evan or Mallachi…we never really got anything going consistently…We kind of relied on a play there and a play here…that’s not really the offense that we’ve been this year,” added Chrystie.
Norwich’s Holden Ryan led the Tornado in rushing yards with 63. Norwich’s Mallachi Gaters led the team in receiving yards with 49. Brady Smith anchored the Tornado defense by leading the team in tackles with eight.
Norwich (5-2) will be back in action on Friday, October 22nd at 7 p.m. for Tornado homecoming as they host perennial Section IV and New York State champion Chenango Forks Blue Devils. The Blue Devils, are ranked sixth in NYS Class C football as of publication. Friday’s game also has a Class C Division IV title bragging rights on the line, along with crucial sectional implications on the line.
