Family hosts fundraiser for woman battling cancer

NORWICH – There will be a fundraiser this Saturday to help a woman battling against bilateral breast cancer, and representatives said they hope the event will help cover medical bills and spread breast cancer awareness.

The event is a spaghetti dinner that will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., on Saturday, at the Norwich VFW located at 61 East Main Street in the City of Norwich.

According to one of the event organizers Christa Mirabito, her younger sister Nicole Mirabito has been battling with cancer for months, which has taken its toll on her finances as well as her health.

Mirabito said her sister was a corrections officer before being taken out for medical leave earlier this year.

“I found out about this in May,” said Mirabito. “What happened was she felt a lump and she wasn’t going to say anything because she had just had a mammogram 6 months earlier. She did end up saying something to her primary doctor - thank goodness.”

“She was ordered to have several tests done, and once they came back positive for cancer everyone was devastated.”

She said her grandmother had breast cancer, and she personally has had her own scares. She added that originally she was told it was only one breast, but then they did a biopsy on the other one and found cancer there as well.

“She didn’t want a fundraiser, she’s a very private person, but we had a lot of people approach the family and ask if she was going to do anything,” said Mirabito. “She’s been reluctant, but the event has grown since we first started talking about it.”

“We have a great community, and a lot of people have been more than generous and have donated. It’s awesome growing up here and coming across all of the people that I didn’t even know that knew my sister.”

Mirabito said a big part of this fundraiser is to raise awareness, because people may not realize they have cancer before it’s too late. She said it’s going to be a long journey for her sister, but hopefully after three more months of treatment she will recover.

She added that hopefully the family is able to raise enough money to cover her medical bills.

“It’s that ‘C word’ that scares everybody, but at the same time now that she has been diagnosed, she has been her own advocate,” said Mirabito. “She’s so positive, she’s an inspiration to me, and she always tells me you can’t sweat the small stuff.”

She said the cost of the dinner is $15, and Nina’s will be providing a spaghetti and meatball dinner, salad, rolls, iced tea, lemonade, coffee, and dessert. She added that children under five eat free, and there will be a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, bake sale, and a t-shirt sale.

“There will also be an eagle chainsaw wood sculpture raffle which is $10 a ticket, and a drawing for the eagle will happen on November 30,” Mirabito added. “If you’re unable to attend and would like to donate, please feel free to reach out to us at (607) 226-0170.”
