No 1 ranked Tornado Volleyball clinch STAC East Division

ONEONTA- In what is a major breakthrough in program history, the Norwich varsity girls’ volleyball team are Southern Tier Athletic Conference East Division Champions. Norwich wrapped up a stellar regular season by defeating their longtime rival the Oneonta Yellowjackets in an intense four game set to clinch the program’s pivotal milestone.
The Tornado (15-1) added another success to their already impressive 2021 resume; Number 1 team in NYS class B girls’ volleyball according to MaxPreps.com, advance their 15 game winning streak, and now STAC East Champions.
Norwich played in a very hostile environment with fans packing Oneonta’s gymnasium, but the Tornado remained undeterred in their focus of a capturing that elusive division title.
“The girls showed a lot of character playing in that environment…the gym was packed…I’m proud of them,” said Norwich Assistant Coach Pete Komendarek, adding that this was the definition of a great team win.
Meg Lindridge provided the hustle for the Tornado as she was undeterred in mopping the floor with her jersey, recording a team high 15 digs in the contest. Norwich senior Maddy Morris was back into her bag of tricks, dishing out a team high 13 assists. Madisyn Ryan also did her part in distributing the volleyball, recording nine assists on the night.
Lauren Squires brought the hammer down in the match, providing a monstrous 14 kills to pace the Tornado in the power category. Miranda Cole also finished her fair share of plays by being second in kills with nine of her own.
“We play like we practice. We’ve (Head Coach Shelly Alger and I) really instilled in these girls that their strength is getting the ball to the net and putting the other team on defense,” said Komendarek on Norwich’s victory,“When that happens…we wear the other team down and it puts us in a good position to get the momentum going.”
The Tornado will now be off until the start of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference playoffs next week, where they are expected to be a one-seed. Be sure to tune into The Evening Sun for future coverage on the Norwich girls’ volleyball STAC playoff run.
