Norwich council votes on marijuana legislation
NORWICH — The City of Norwich Common Council held their final vote on the proposed local marijuana law Monday night.
While they already opted to take no action on allowing dispensaries within the city, thus making them legal, the council ultimately voted against allowing on-site consumption establishments.
"Tonight we adopted a local law that prohibits on-site consumption," said Alderman Matthew Caldwell. "We did not address the retail sale and dispensaries in the City of Norwich."
He said that going forward, marijuana retail sales and dispensaries will become legal within the city after December 31. From there, the future of marijuana retail businesses depends on the state.
"My understanding is that a legislative body has to take action by 12/31 of 2021. So as soon as the state can provide the licensing and those types of things, essentially at that point somebody, an entrepreneur, could open something," Caldwell explained. "It's hard to say when they'll have that part of the process ready for the public."
"We're waiting to see what more will come from the state as far as regulations and those types of things, when they solidify all the details," he added.
