Police: Stalker posing as fire official attacks victim in home

OTSEGO COUNTY — According to police, a Unadilla man attempted to sexually assault a victim after impersonating a firefighter to get inside their home.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Felix J. Hartman, 33, of Unadilla, following an investigation in the Town of Unadilla on Friday.

Hartman, has been charged with attempted rape, stalking, criminal impersonation and other charges.

The investigation revealed that on Friday, March 4, the defendant entered the victim’s residence claiming he was a member of a fire department. Once inside of the residence, the defendant attempted to sexually assault the victim and in the process, the victim sustained an arm injury.

After the defendant left, the victim called a neighbor who contacted 911. The victim was transported to AO Fox Hospital where she received medical treatment for her injuries and was released from the hospital the following day.

Several hours later, the New York State Police received an additional sexual assault complaint originating in the Town of Otego. Investigators from both agencies worked in conjunction and the defendant was developed as a suspect.

Hartman was located by the New York State Police at his residence in Unadilla.

He was arrested for first degree burglary, a class B felony; first degree attempted rape, a class C felony; third degree assault, a class A misdemeanor; forcible touching, a class A misdemeanor; third degree stalking, a class A misdemeanor; and second degree criminal impersonation, a class A misdemeanor.

After consulting with Otsego County District Attorney John Muehl, the defendant was arraigned in the presence of Honorable David Trevvett of Otsego County Centralized Arraignment on Sunday, March 6.

The defendant was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 surety bond. An order of protection was issued for the victim. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
