Norwich Police investigating property damage at local business
NORWICH — The City of Norwich Police Department is investigating an incident in which a man allegedly attempted to fight several individuals in front of the Norwich Smoke Shop on North Broad Street, before entering the store and damaging property.
NPD Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach reports on Monday, April 25, officers responded to a call around 10:30 p.m. regarding a disorderly man in front of the Smoke Shop.
Tylor Thomas, 33, was charged with second degree criminal mischief, a felony, as well as third degree menacing, reckless endangerment of property, and second degree harassment, all misdemeanors.
"Officers on the scene made contact with store employees at the Smoke Shop, and it was learned that Tylor [Thomas] entered into the store and attempted to fight employees and patrons therein," said Roach.
Police reported Thomas also damaged store property, which reached the dollar amount for felony level criminal mischief.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and the NPD said they are working closely with the District Attorney's Office. They are also investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, as it is alleged Thomas was using racial slurs before he attempted to fight employees and patrons, and damaged store property.
"This incident was recorded on store surveillance cameras, and I can tell you that it is very disturbing," Roach said.
The NPD said Thomas was released on an appearance ticket in compliance with bail reform, and is scheduled to appear in Norwich City Court at a later date.
