Chenango County Clerk and NY State Police: Pistol owners must renew permits every 5 years
ALBANY – New York State (NYS) firearms laws require pistol / revolver license holders to recertify their status every five years.
Failure to recertify within the five-year deadline will result in the revocation of your pistol / revolver license.
As part of the recertification process, you, as a pistol / revolver license holder, are required to confirm certain information such as your name, the current address of your residence, your date of birth, and a list of all pistols and revolvers you currently possess, including the associated make, model, caliber, and serial number(s).
New York State residents will need to have a New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Identification Card in order to complete the recertification process. Out of state residents who do not possess either a New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Identification Card must attach a copy of their driver license or non-driver identification from their state of issuance.
How to Recertify
New York State residents can recertify their pistol / revolver license electronically by visiting https://firearms.troopers.ny.gov/pprecert/ and following the instructions on that web page.
New York State residents can also recertify through the U.S. mail by filling out a paper form (available at https://troopers.ny.gov/Firearms/ or any New York State Police location) and then mailing the completed form to New York State Police, Pistol Permit Bureau, Building 22, 1220 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12226-2252. Out of state residents who do not possess either a New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Identification Card must use the paper form to recertify.
When to Recertify
If you receive a letter it is because our records indicate that you are due to recertify your pistol / revolver license in 2022.
The deadline to recertify is based on the date that you were originally issued your pistol / revolver license or the date of your most recent recertification.
