SOFTBALL: Greene gets by Unatego
GREENE– On Thursday, the Greene softball team shut out Unatego 5-0 in seven innings.
Payton Yahner pitched a complete game for the Trojans, giving up just three hits, no walks, and struck out nine batters. Yahner also went 3-for-3 with three singles and earned four stolen bases.
Coach Judi Manshaffer was impressed by Yahner’s day on the mound.
“Payton did a great job today pitching a complete seven inning game,” Manshaffer said. “She wasn’t rattled by any error or hit. She stayed focused and pitched her game.”
Behind Yahner, Olivia Kennedy led off the game with a home run that Manshaffer says “almost made it to the parking lot.”
Catcher McKenzie Scott hit a triple in the fifth and scored on Yahner’s RBI single. Kylie Ferris had two RBIs on the day while Abbey Yahner had an RBI single in the seventh.
While Greene’s offense was dominant, it all came down to the defense to help secure the win.
“McKenzie Scott did a great job behind the plate calling pitches and ended the game on a double play. She caught a popped up bunt attempt and also got the runner off first,” Manshaffer said. “Olivia Kennedy did a great job pulling in the throw from Mckenzie to end the game.”
