Chenango County Tennis teams compete at sectionals

STARLIGHT– On Thursday May 12, the Norwich, Oxford, and Greene tennis teams competed in sectionals in Starlight, Pennsylvania.

In the first round of singles, Oxford’s John Rovente defeated Roxbury’s Ryder Albano 6-3 and 5-2 to advance.

Greene’s Maeric Barrows received a bye while teammate Shane Rideout advanced against Delhi’s Bryce Burrows (7-5,5-4).

Sus Valley’s Samar Dhillon defeated Oxford’s Ethan Ehly in the best of three. Ehly took the first match 6-1, but fell in the final two matches (6-2, 6-2).

Hunter-Tannersville’s William Schneider got past Norwich’s Kris Duell with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.

In the second round of singles, Rovente was eliminated from moving on as Chenango Forks’ Brian Tye took both matches with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

Greene’s Barrows and Rideout both move on. Barrows defeated Ian Gilmore from Hunter-Tannersville 6-2, 6-1. Rideout earned the victory against Sus Valley’s Dhillon (7-5, 6-4).

Barrows then defeated Delhi’s Hailee Bodo 6-2 and 6-4 to advance to the semifinals, where she lost in two matches to Sus Valley’s Issac Spottek (6-2,6-1). Rideout lost to Sidney’s Danny Morris (6-2,6-2).

For doubles, Greene’s Samantha Darling and Paige Estabrook made it through the first round over Deposit-Hancock’s Enola Butler and Emily Moore (6-0,6-2). Teammates Cassie Butler and Paul Starliper defeated Bainbridge-Guilford’s Cooper Sienko and Giovanni Johnson (6-1, 6-1).

Oxford’s Madalyn Barrows and Ethan Fleury received a bye while Jill and Jocie Finch defeated Norwich’s Michael Zheng and Donavan Gillen, with the second match withdrawn due to a medical reason.

In the second round, Delhi’s Risdon Reed and Tabor Reed defeated Darling and Estabrook with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Chenango Forks’ Alex McMullen and Joey Worden took care of Butler and Starliper with two 6-3 victories.

Chenango Forks’ Evan Jacobs and partner Eli Stocum advanced to the Quarterfinals after a victory over Oxford’s Barrows and Fleury in a best of three. Jacobs-Stocum won the first match with a close 7-6 victory before Barrows and Fleury took match two 6-3. Jacobs-Stocum got past them in the final match with a score of 6-4.

Sus Valley’s Jamison Cook with Daniel Davies defeated Jill and Jocie Finch in both matches (6-1,6-0).

Both Delhi teams (Risdon Reed-Tabor Reed and Bryce Burrows-Owen Haight) won the Semifinals.
