NORWICH — The Chenango Greenway Conservancy held the first Race to the Face 5K and Mountain Goat Challenge in Norwich on Sunday, September 25. Participants raced from West Park to the Stone Quarry Face overlooking the city.

Katina Sayers of Tully won the Mountain Goat Challenge by being the first person to reach the face and ring the bell with a time of 14:25. Jason Pistilli of Fayetteville finished the 5K course around the quarry with a time of 31:56. Both winners received $50 in prize money and trophies made of stone from the quarry.

Event organizer Dr. Scott Sutton said, “This event was tremendous fun, everyone loved it and encouraged us to make it an annual event.”

The Chenango Greenway Conservancy is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) public charity organized in 2006 to develop a network of multiple use recreation trails in and around the City of Norwich.

The organization acquired the Stone Quarry property in December 2021 following an intense community fundraising effort, and is now developing plans to improve access and opportunities for outdoor recreation at the site.
