GREENE – On Wednesday, the Greene Trojans boys soccer team advanced to the next round of Sectionals after a 1-0 shutout victory over Franklin/Unatego.
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Greene struck on their first shot of the game. Liam Flanagan pushed by several defenders and put a shot past goalie Aiden Ross. Flanagan’s goal was the only goal of the game, even though both teams had great chances to extend the scoring.
Franklin/Unatego was close to tying the game in the second half after earning corner kicks, but Greene headed the ball out of the way and goalie Tony Sergi stood his ground with nine saves.
Within a minute left, everyone thought Greene would score again as Kenny Baucas had leeway with Ross out of net but was pressured on defense and the ball sailed away.
Greene managed to hold a tight lead and it was enough to advance. The Trojans will head to Afton/Harpursville on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
