NORWICH – The Norwich Fire Department responded to a fire in the basement of St. Paul's Catholic Church Tuesday morning.

The Norwich Police also responded. Several other fire departments were called to the scene after crews found rooms filled with smoke and an active fire in the basement area.

Light smoke could be seen coming from the church, located at 30 Pleasant Street in the City of Norwich. Crews were on scene within minutes of the 911 call.

Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino said crews were working to control and extinguish a fire at the time.

Crews reported having the fire out by about 10 a.m. but smoke continued to rise above the church. No flames or visible damage could be seen from the outside, but the entrance and lobby were filled with smoke.

Representatives from Holy Family School said the school was not directly impacted. Police and firemen checked the school and determined it was safe. The church and school are separate buildings connected by a hallway that has a commercial fire door between them.

No injuries were reported Tuesday morning. Crews were still responding and an investigation pending. Read more in Wednesday's Evening Sun.
