OXFORD – The Oxford Blackhawks girls basketball team faced Chenango Forks in a non-league match-up as both teams prepped for sectionals. Chenango Forks, who competes in the STAC league, defeated their MAC opponent 64-47 in a dynamic second half.
Both teams came to play to start the game as the Blue Devils struck with 23 points and Oxford had 20. Once Oxford got a sense of Forks, they were able to finish the first half strong, pressuring on defense and setting up on offensive to take a brief 34-31 lead at halftime.
Unfortunately, that lead was erased as the Blue Devils quickly tied up the game and continued pressuring Oxford during the inbound to take away the ball defensively. They were able to perform dynamically on both ends of the court and limited Oxford from striking back. Chenango Forks also made 11-of-20 free-throws on the night while being confident in outrebounding the Blackhawks 45-34.
Oxford’s Madalyn Barrows, who averages 20 points a game, just missed hitting 20 with 19 points and knocked in three three-pointers. She also collected 12 rebounds, setting up her 10th double-double of the season. Ella Kelsey finished behind her with nine points in the loss.
Oxford finishes out the regular season 16-5 and will host Gilbertsville-Mount Upton on Wednesday at 6 p.m. This begins the first round of the Section IV, Class D Tournament. Admission will be charged through GOFan Digital Ticketing.
