NORWICH– New York State Police (NYSP) troopers were dispatched to the Walmart on State Highway 12 in Norwich on July 8 after employees discovered a card skimmer in one of the store’s check-out lanes.
NYSP Trooper Aga Dembinska said troopers and investigators didn’t include in their investigation a specific lane number where they found the skimmer at the store, but she thinks it was located at a register and not a self-checkout lane.
The case is under an ongoing investigation, and troopers are trying to figure out who the suspect is and when the device was placed at the location, Dembinska said.
Dembinska advised customers to be vigilant and use payment options like cash and credit cards to avoid fraud.
“If you're nervous about potentially being a victim from a card skimming device, use cash or a credit card, or just monitor your credit cards and your debit cards to make sure that you don't have any unauthorized purchases,” she said.
Dembinska said that in her Troop C, which consists of seven counties including Chenango County, no other skimmers have been found by troopers than the one in Norwich as of Wednesday morning.
Since last week, NYSP reported numerous incidents of installed card skimming devices within Walmart stores across Central New York and the state’s Southern Tier, including at the Walmart on State Highway 12 in Norwich.
The prevalence of these skimmers in the area, such as in Onondaga County, prompted a Walmart security team to survey the Norwich store for skimmers, Dembinska said.
She recalled one other case involving a card skimmer in her troop within the last four years, and although these cases are not typical, she said her troop has seen them placed in gas stations in the past.
Skimming involves illegally installed devices on ATMs or card readers, which can capture data and record cardholders’ PIN numbers, said NYSP Maj. Vincent T. Lightcap in a press release. People who commit the fraud might use the data to create fake debit or credit cards, use money from the victims’ accounts or sell the stolen information on the internet, he said.
