NEW BERLIN — The Blessing of the Animals and pet parade will be held in appreciative recognition of the astounding services given to mankind by the animal kingdom from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, located at 40 S. Main Street on the lawn of St. Andrew's Church.
Organizers said the service will be open to the entire community and will include a short multi-denominational blessing by three denominations; St. Andrew's Episcopal, St. Theresa's Catholic, and The United Methodist Church.
The Village of New Berlin Mayor Peter Lennon said the non-spiritual and purely recreational part of the event should start around 12:15 p.m.
According to the press release, animals of all kinds are welcome; be it furry, finned, scaled or feathered; big, small and in between, as long as they are properly leashed or crated, and including livestock.
Visitors are welcome to show off their pets in the parade; dressed up or not.
Doctors of Veterinarian Medicine Dr. Lisa and Bill Johnson will be available to provide answers and tips to any pet questions to keep pets healthy and happy.
Dr. Bill said one of his tips is to keep up tick prevention year round. He said ticks have been active all winter in recent years and they’ve seen a huge increase in tick borne diseases in both dogs and cats.
“There are extremely effective products available at your local vet clinic. Keep the ticks off of yourself also,” he added.
Artistic Director of the New Berlin Cultural Center Andreia Keller will provide her famous homemade bread at the event and will also offer her artistic face painting skills on children's faces.
Edible people treats will be available and include free hot dogs, Kit-Kat bars, and Goldfish crackers.
Pet-healthy treats from Pam's Pet Treats will be available for purchase.
According to the Saint Patrick Catholic Church and School web page, the blessing of the animals is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis, born in the 12th century, became a monk and founded the contemporary order of Franciscans. He was known for his vow of poverty and special connections to animals and nature. He is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment.
A number of congregations bless their pets on this day. Some people bring their pets to church service while others bring photographs or just have their pets blessed by naming them.
