Marauders buoyed by big third quarter
Sherburne-Earlville 26 - Jamesville-Dewitt 0
JAMESVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville’s dominant third quarter helped it establish firm command as the Marauders blanked Jamesville-Dewitt on Friday night.
Moving up to play the largest Section III Class B school, the Marauders expanded on their 6-0 halftime lead scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter.
It was also the first shutout win for S-E (4-1) since blanking Adirondack in 2017 en route to a Section III postseason appearance.
“We challenged our offensive line (at halftime) to just be better,” said S-E head coach Steve Franklin. “We put the game (on the offensive line’s) backs.”
The Marauders’ lone first-half TD was a 29-yard TD pass from Darren Miles to Nick Hull on the heels of an Aaron Key interception.
While that was an early bright spot, S-E had to fight off two uncharacteristic first-half turnovers on its side of the field turning back J-D both times inside the Marauders 30.
Later on in the game, J-D threatened with a first-and-goal from the S-E three but failed to score on four tries.
Buoyed by that inspirational defense, the Marauders’ offense – which went more to a power look versus their normal spread look – drove down the field on the first possession of the second half.
Justin Race had a big run to start the drive, Ethan Shaw rumbled 43 yards to the J-E one, and Miles snuck it in from there.
Shaw broke multiple tackles on his way to a 47-yard scoring upping the lead to 20-0, and Hull scored on his second TD reception of the game taking in a Miles bubble screen.
Shaw, held to three yards rushing in the first half, finished with a game-high 110 yards rushing.
Miles finished 10 of 14 passing for 114 yards, and Hull had a game-high six catches for 96 yards.
On pace for a playoff appearance, Franklin said there is no way anyone on the current roster will take the current success for granted.
“We won’t have a problem staying hungry,” Franklin said. “The team knows what it feels like to not be successful.”
