NORWICH — This year, the long-running Norwich Family YMCA Halloween Parade and costume contest added a new element to the event. The YMCA and Norwich Business Improvement District (B.I.D.) have teamed up to host a Business and Home Halloween Decorating contest.
The annual YMCA Halloween Parade will begin at 11 a.m. on October 28 in conjunction with Saturday in the Park with Chobani. Halloween costumes, floats and decorated homes, yards and businesses will be judged for the winning best and announced at the awards ceremony following the parade on the Chenango County Courthouse steps.
The business and home decorating invitation goes out to schools, businesses, clubs, churches, organizations, marching bands, fire departments, families, and more. Anyone can be judged. Send a photo in email to trevoir@norwichymca.org.
YMCA Sport Director Tom Revoir said, “The parade starts from BeeBee Avenue. We usually have about 1000 participants lined up on several side streets off of South Broad Street, including Beebe Avenue, Francis Avenue, Hickok Avenue, Conkey Avenue, and Front Street.”
The costume categories include funniest costume, most original, spookiest costume, cutest costume, and the judges’ award. Categories for floats include the non-school float award, the family costume/float award, the school float/participation award, and the business float award.
Participants aged 12 and under, wishing to have their costumes judged, may do so by either walking slowly by the judges stand during or after the parade.
Revoir advised individuals wishing to participate in the costume judging contest should wear an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper with a random picked number drawn on the paper. The number and a costume description will be used to announce the award winners. Judges pick the best two in each category and they will receive $20.
Revoir said they have what they call the family float/costume award. So that one's just basically designed for families. If they wanted to do a float they could, or they could have a themed family costume presentation.
There is no age restriction to enter a float and first place winners receive a trophy and $100 gift card to Nina’s. There will be acknowledgment of the top three floats.
All participants should go back to the court house park for results of the winning floats, costumes and decorated homes or business. Prizes include mountain bikes, footballs, basketballs, watches, gift cards and more. Raffle tickets will also be handed out at the court house steps to youth age 12 and under.
