Farm destroyed by fire over the weekend

SHERBURNE – Fire departments from across the northern part of the Chenango County and surrounding areas responded to a structure fire along State Highway 80 between Sherburne and Columbus on Saturday afternoon.

No injuries or loss of life was reported by crews at the scene Saturday evening.

Dozens of firemen from Sherburne, New Berlin, Earlville, Smyrna, and nearby Madison County responded to the farm residence, located a few minutes from downtown Columbus at 4049 State Highway 80. Smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away including downtown Sherburne and State Highway 12.

The 911 call for the fire came in at about at 3:28 p.m., Saturday. The first crews arriving on scene reported finding RV trailers and other parts of the property, including parts of a barn, completely engulfed in flames. Significant damage was reported.

Traffic was delayed in the area and crews were on scene for a number of hours. No further information about the incident was available by press time Monday morning.
