City of Norwich Youth Bureau shares success of summer programs

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Youth Bureau enjoyed a successful Summer recreational program seeing its largest number of participants since 2011.

This summer the Youth Bureau had 722 kids, and adults, register for their recreation programs and trips. The Youth Bureau offered eleven recreational programs this summer: baseball, softball, basketball, cheer, dance, flag football, pickleball, soccer, summer fun club, swimming lessons and tennis.
Plus, they offered five trips this summer to Howe Caverns, the Museum of Science and Technology, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, The Wild Animal Park, and Water Safari.

Swimming lessons were our most popular activity this year, with over 231 kids from 0 to 18 in age taking swimming lessons. Lessons were offered at Kurt Beyer Pool in the mornings. New to the programs this year was the dance program.
Dance was taught at the Donna Frech School of Dance, where the students learned basic dance steps. Dance was an extremely popular choice, filling to capacity within a week of opening registration.   All the sport programs are non-competitive, instructional programs geared toward the child having fun, while learning the sport or activity.

Our most popular trip was Howe Caverns. Over seventy adults and kids registered to explore the cavern. Bus transportation was provided free of charge for all the trips, except Water Safari.

The summer recreation programs and trips were offered free of charge to residents of the City of Norwich, towns of North Norwich, Norwich, Plymouth, Pharsalia, and Preston. A little more than half the participants were from the city of Norwich. It is nice that we can contract with the towns to offer activities to kids in the surrounding area. We look forward to continuing those partnerships.

Not only does the Youth Bureau offer programs for young kids, but it also offers job opportunities during the summer. This past summer the Youth Bureau employed thirty-three people to run the programs and as lifeguards at Kurt Beyer. Twenty-eight of these jobs were filled by high school or college age kids looking for work during the summer months.

The Youth Bureau hopes the success of this past summer continues with their winter program registration, which is going on now. This winter the Youth Bureau will offer indoor activities at the Soccer Center on Maple St. in Norwich. The programs will include baseball, soccer, softball, and cheer. We will also offer bowling at the Elks Club in Norwich and Pee Wee wrestling at High School wrestling.

The Elks Club continues to offer bowling on their lanes for the area youth. As the only bowling alley in the city, we are extremely grateful that the Elks Club continues to provide this opportunity for kids to learn the sport.

Registration for the Winter programs can be found on the Youth Bureau’s Facebook page.
