JORDAN - After defeating Jordan-Elbridge in the semi-finals, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders put their 2023 season in the books as they played a rematch against Southern Hills for the Section III, C2/D2 championship game.
S-E defeated the Storm 36-24 in their match-up in mid-September. However, Saturday’s game proved to be a different outcome.
The game was held on the turf at Jordan-Elbridge high school, where the local S-E fans and cheerleaders made the trip to support the team that had a lot to celebrate this year. Unfortunately, S-E fell 20-8 to a much different Southern Hills team that they witnessed on their home field a month before.
The game was tight from beginning to end with Southern Hills taking a brief 13-0 lead at halftime and with both teams playing aggressive defense. S-E was still in the game and gave it all they got in the second half with almost executing on an offensive drive before turning the ball over on downs after getting called for a few hard penalties.
The Marauders’ defense was put to work and forced a few turnovers in their tough containment. It was the special teams that finally set up points on the board as Dominic Fowlston blocked Southern Hills’ punt in the end-zone for the score. S-E’s quarterback Darren Miles handed the ball off to Ethan Shaw for the successful two-point conversion. Shaw and Nick Hull continued to be the play-makers for the Marauders offense with Landon Andrade also getting the ball on a few carries. S-E was dependable on their run game throughout the contest with Southern Hills pressuring on the pass. Southern Hills scored one final time on a drive set up on S-E’s four- yard line from a turnover on downs as Miles tried to set up a deep pass to Nick Hull twice.
S-E’s head coach Steve Franklin said that he tried to work out several different play options from watching film, but he credited Southern Hills for coming in with a solid game plan this time around. Franklin is very proud of his team for their tremendous hard-work they’ve put in this season.
“This result doesn’t change the fact that we’ve had one of the most successful seasons in school history,” Franklin said. “ I just love those guys. They’re good kids and they work hard.”
S-E finished the 2023 season with a 7-3 record and with many milestones from quarterback Darren Miles and great work all around by a talented team who “never settled for less” to accomplish such success.
Congratulations S-E on a great season and best of luck to all the seniors.
