SHERBURNE – It was a wild finish at Sherburne-Earlville high school as the Lady Marauders took on the Mount Markham Mustangs to start the 2023 season.
S-E took the lead with a minute and a half remaining in regulation and played aggressive defense to come out on top 53-49. Both teams put on a competitive show, which was also helped by the spark of S-E basketball cheerleading returning and a great turnout of the home crowd.
S-E’s strong defense put them into foul trouble, but forced Mount Markham to turn the ball over on multiple travel violations and broken up or bad passes, especially in the final 10 seconds of the game.
S-E was led by senior Alex Grzymkowski, who gave the team the lead for good as she knocked down her fifth and final three-point shot of the night, and finished with 19 points.
Chesnee Miller finished with 11 points and sealed the victory with two made free-throws with 15 seconds remaining. Alyse Brown hit a couple three’s with eight points and had a few blocks on defense while Hannah-Todd Rogers contributed with seven points. Abby Shaver helped collect defensive rebounds and scored six points as Kendall Hill added two in the victory.
