GREENE – The Greene Trojans girls basketball team returned home Tuesday to face Walton/Downsville, where they came away with a dominant 60-30 victory. The Trojans are rolling along at 3-0, which is only the type of start the program is used to. Greene leads the MAC division II league and is second overall as Unatego (division I) is off to a 4-0 start.
It was a slow and difficult start for the home team as they were heavily pressured which forced them to turn the ball over multiple times in the first quarter. However, Greene picked up the pace to set themselves up strong on both ends of the court as their defense returned the pressure and the offense found movement. Greene took a 14-point lead at halftime and never looked back as they finished off with the same strong force.
The Trojans were led by freshman Mia Yahner with a team-high of 12 points, making a big run in the final eight minutes of play. Lyla Biefeldt had nine points while Abby Yahner finished with eight points and at least four other girls came away with seven points as well in the victory.
Greene (3-0) heads to Sidney on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Scores by quarter:
WD 4 11 8 7—30
GR 12 17 14 17—60
GR: Mia Yahner 12, Lyla Biefeldt 9, Abby Yahner 8, Cali Knapp 7, Claire Flanagan 7, Mya Leggett 7, Molly Cornell 3.
