Sheriff charges Smithville resident for welfare fraud

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested a Town of Smithville resident on December 18 for felony welfare fraud and grand larceny.
Katelyn Tresnak was charged following a complaint from the Chenango County Department of Social Services' Fraud Investigation Division.
Investigators accuse Tresnak of illegally trafficking over $1,400 in SNAP Benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) issues electronic benefits that can be used like cash to purchase food.
Tresnak was released on an appearance ticket and will appear in the Village of Oxford Court at a later date. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the social services fraud investigation division.
All crimes are allegations, and suspects named are innocent of the charges until proven guilty in a court of law.
