Girls’ Basketball: Greene pulls out win vs Unatego in final possession
UNATEGO – It was an intense contest between the reigning girls’ MAC champion Unatego and the Greene Lady Trojans on Wednesday night. The game came down to the wire and Greene ended up on the winning side, thanks to Cali Knapp and the Trojans’ fierce defense. Knapp stole the ball and scored the game-winning basket with one second remaining in regulation. Greene won 30-28 to achieve their ninth win of the season.
Both teams played a tough head-to-head defensive battle throughout the game with the Spartans taking a brief three-point 15-12 lead at halftime. The intensity would only continue in the second half, which Greene ignited their best play in the final eight minutes, setting up 12 team points, which happened to be just enough.
Knapp was a major asset both offensively and defensively while Josie Dutcher led the team with 12 points, knocking over two three’s. Knapp finished with 11 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Mia Yahner, Abby Yahner, and Molly Cornell were all held to just two points each.
Greene improves to 9-1 on the season and is relieved to get through one of their most toughest challenges yet this season. Greene hosts Deposit-Hancock on Friday, where they’ll also celebrate their two seniors Lyla Biefeldt and Molly Cornell in their final regular scheduled home game this season. Friday’s game will begin at 7:15 p.m.
