GREENE – On Tuesday, the Greene Trojans boys’ basketball team hosted MAC opponent Afton in a rescheduled game. Both teams looked sharp throughout the contest, but Greene held on with a 62-53 victory with a boost in the second half.
The score was tied at 29 a piece at halftime with both teams showing competitiveness early on. Afton’s Carter Burns fired up the Crimson Knights offense with eight straight points in the first quarter while teammate Ryan Wright found some room to move before halftime while Bob Mercilliott and Equan Patterson knocked in a few long shots. Greene’s Jaden Eroshevich had an easy time driving to the hoop off some passes from teammate Joel Vielandi.
Eroshevich’s efforts would boost in the third quarter as he ran the boards with 12 points in the quarter alone. He finished with a dominant 30 point night and is pushing with about 14 points scored per game. Eroshevich was able to push the fast pace for the Trojans off a solid defense that pressured Afton to turn the ball over and Greene’s ability to rebound the ball quickly off their own missed free-throw. Joel Vielandi finished with 10 points in the win.
Afton’s Ryan Wright continued to play consistent in the second half, along with Burns, but were unable to get closer in the final minutes. Wright finished with 21 points as Burns had 15 in the loss.
Greene improves to 9-5 on the season and hosts non-league opponent Oneonta in a rescheduled game on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Afton (3-12) heads to Unadilla Valley, who will celebrate senior night, at the same time.
