Girls’ Basketball: Norwich tops Oneonta
ONEONTA – The Norwich Purple Tornado girls’ basketball team is on a roll, winning four out of their last six games, including Tuesday’s match-up against Oneonta. Norwich swept the two-game series against their rivals with a 53-38 win. Norwich is sitting comfortable at 9-6 on the season with three regular season games remaining.
Both teams played neck-and-neck in the first half with Norwich taking a 31-25 lead. First half efforts were led by Olivia Schiraldi, Bella Dilorio, and Josey Ryan, who scored most of their total points in those 16 minutes alone. Schiraldi banked in three three’s for nine points as Dilorio added six of her total eight points in the first quarter. Josey Ryan hit two three’s for seven points in the first half.
Emma Urgo, the team’s leading scorer with 16 points, had a strong second half, where she combined for 12 points in the final two quarters. Norwich was also able to hold Oneonta to single-digit scoring during that time to secure a comfortable lead and the victory.
Norwich (9-6) hosts Sus Valley, who have already clinched the STAC East division title, on Thursday for senior night. Seniors Julie Turner, Olivia Schiraldi, and Julia Llewellyn will be honored before the 7:15 p.m. tip-off.
