SHERBURNE – It was a special night at Sherburne-Earlville high school upper gymnasium as it was S-E's final home game. S-E took on Sidney for senior night. Prior to tip-off, S-E honored its five seniors; Aaron Key, Darren Miles, Noah Bigford, Nelson Hadlock, and Avery Parsons. S-E also honored head coach Kevin Vibbard Sr., who announced his retirement after 36 years of coaching.
Vibbard led S-E to seven CSC league championships, won Section III’s coach of the year twice, and achieved about 250 wins. His 2007 team was state-ranked and went undefeated in the regular season, but fell in the class B tournament semifinals. Vibbard also has ran a summer basketball camp to teach the youth the game of basketball and create future S-E basketball stars, as well as running the Dave Dolly Youth Program on Saturday mornings. From his hard-work, dedication, and success throughout the S-E basketball program, Vibbard was honored in a big way as the S-E Central School District dedicated the basketball court to him.
S-E made the seniors and Vibbard proud with a 64-53 win on Kevin Vibbard court. The seniors paved the way throughout the entire contest and all five seniors had scored in the first quarter with the last, Aaron Key making his three-pointer and then some with 2:24 remaining in the quarter. S-E put the subs in the second quarter to give the seniors a break and the momentum kept up with Dilen Maceda finding room on every attempt he had the ball. Maceda finished with a team-high 20 points and was perfect on the free-throw line, making six-for-six.
Once Key found his rhythm, he followed behind Maceda with 11 points. S-E took a dominant 38-24 lead at halftime. At halftime, S-E honored its two senior cheerleaders after they performed a great halftime routine. Congratulations to Bryleigh Grant and Batya Mizrahi.
After the break, S-E got back to work and continued to fire away with a comfortable lead. Sidney tried their best to catch up in the fourth quarter with Grady Loeffler knocking in a few three's for the Sabers, but S-E was too strong. S-E (8-11) heads to Clinton to wrap up the regular season on Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m.
