Local athletes shine at indoor track State qualifiers

ITHACA – All local indoor track teams were in full strength at the 2024 Section IV State qualifiers meet held at Cornell University on Sunday afternoon. BGA, Norwich, and Unadilla Valley are sending multiple athletes to states while Oxford/Greene finished off a solid winter season. Congratulations to all athletes. BGA:
Girls:
After winning the sectional title, the Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton girls settled into the state qualifiers strong. The Bears’ 4x800 relay team, which consisted of Maddie Ingham, Ethne Degan, Lelania Baldwin, Laila Williams, Vanessa Brazee, Sage Pruskowski, Macey LaFever, and Kaydence Brimmer finished second with a time of 10:40.79 behind Corning’s 10:03.17.
Degan led all female runners in the 1000 meter run with a first place finish that sends her to states again. She achieved a time of 3:02.41 with teammate Ingham in seventh place with a new best time of 3:13.86. Lelania Baldwin finished 11 with her new personal best time of 3:29.13.
Degan also competed in the 1500 meter run, where she came in 13th place with a time of 5:41.31 as Vanessa Brazee finished behind her in 14th with a new best time of 5:41.80. Makayla McCloud took third in the 55 meter dash with a speedy time of 7.60 seconds. She also finished 13th in the long jump (15-7.25). Emily Sprow finished 12th in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, seven and 3/4 inches. She came in sixth in the triple jump (33-6.25).
Tori Suda rounded out the day with a 14th place finish in the weight throw and a 18th place finish in the shotput events. Suda achieved a new personal best throw of 26 feet, eight inches in the weight throw and threw for 24-7 in the shot put.
Boys:
Collin Dicks was phenomenal for the BGA boys with some help from teammates Julian Pruskowski, Kevin Lang, and Harpo Hardt. Dicks heads to states after his first place victory in the triple jump, an event he’s been excelling in all season. He topped all male fielders with a jump of 42 feet, one and 3/4 inches. He also finished fourth in the long jump with a jump of 20-7.25.
Pruskowski took fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 40-1.25 as Harpo Hardt set a new best jump of 38 feet, 10 inches for ninth place. Kevin Lang ran the 300 meter dash in 38.35 seconds.
NHS:
The Norwich Purple Tornado indoor track teams saw much success from their strong male runners this season while the females have made major improvements.
Girls:
Ava Cirigliano led the Norwich girls with a fifth place finish in the 300 meter dash. She set a new best time of 44.91 seconds. Annie Boland finished 23rd in the 1500 meter run with a time of 6:26.97.
Lara Tefft came in eighth place in the weight-throw with her new best throw of 33 feet, nine inches as Olivia Palmer finished 16th (26-0). Tefft also finished 10th in the shot put event with a throw of 28 feet, five inches.
Boys:
The Norwich boys are sending Richard Fuller and Gabe Decker to states next weekend after both men finished atop the 300 meter dash leaderboards. Fuller took first place with his new best time of 35.95 seconds as Decker followed in second with his own personal best of 36.36.
Fuller, Decker, along with Caden Sutton, Cameron Carnahan, Spencer Root, and Kaiden Vidler, ran as a team for the 4x400 meter relay, where they came in third with a time of 3:39.38. Corning took first with a time of 3:35.86.
Sutton also competed in the 600 meter run, where he came in sixth place with a new best time of 1:28.64. Senior Gabe Blenis earned a new best 53 feet, six inch throw in the weight-throw event, which was good for third place. He also took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet exactly.
O/G:
The Oxford/Greene indoor track team have made their mark this season and it can only go up from here. Congratulations to all athletes for their hard work and dedication this season.
Girls:
Rhea Malmquist and Shanna Krupp were the female representatives for Greene in the fielding events. Krupp made a lasting impression on her final meet of junior year as she set a new best throw of 25 feet, 11 inches in the weight throw event, which was good for 17th place. Malmquist capped off her first and final year of indoor track with a 19th place finish in shot put with a throw of 21 feet, seven inches.
Boys:
Gordon Smith, Isaac Utter, and Lazarus Ludolph had a solid finish for the Oxford/Greene boys team. Smith led all runners with a seventh place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:33.36. He also earned 19th place in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:02.83. Lazarus Ludolph finished 21st in the 300 meter dash with his new best time of 40.28 seconds.
Isaac Utter rounded out the meet with a 15th place finish in the weight throw, where he set a new best throw of 33 feet, six inches.
UV:
Girls:
The Unadilla Valley Storm girls indoor track team has been on a roll this season and is sending both Jaiden Schrag and Gracie Gorrell to states next weekend for all their accomplishments throughout the season. Schrag and Gorrell led the 4x200 relay team along with Kalie Fernandez-Naughton, and Molly Gorrell to a third place finish with a time of 1:55.85, behind Binghamton and Corning. Gracie, Jaiden, Molly, Kalie, and Madison Dix took fourth in the 4x400 relay as Margaret Kemnah and Noelle Fernandez-Naughton, and Natalya Schrag joined Molly Gorrell in the 4x800 for fourth place as well.
Molly Gorrell and Madison Dix also competed in the 600 meter run together. Dix took eighth place with a new best time of 1:46.11 as eighth grader Gorrell finished 12th with a new best 1:50.36.
Natalya Schrag earned a ninth place finish in the 1000 meter run, achieving her personal best time of 3:21.34. Gracie Gorrell, who will be competing at states on the intersectional relay team, came in third place in the 300 meter dash with a time of 44.15 seconds.
Jaiden Schrag qualified for states in the 55 meter hurdles, where she finished second with her new best time of 8.76 seconds. Jaiden also finished eighth in the long jump with a jump of 16-1.75. Kalie Fernandez-Naughton finished her final meet in seventh place in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, six inches and also finished 11th in the triple jump (30-10).
Boys:
Jacob Prentice and Alex Kemnah led the UV boys at the State qualifiers. Prentice set a new record in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, six inches for seventh place. He also ran a new best 38.95 in the 300 meter dash for 13th. Kemnah finished 15th in the 1000 meter run, where he set a new personal best time of 2:57.65.
