SHERBURNE — The Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center is kicking off the second session of their Quarterly Book Club with "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Friends of Rogers Environmental Educator Ellen Rathbone said the author is a member of the Potawatomi Nation, and her book focuses on "bringing Indigenous ways of knowing in tandem with scientific knowledge, and how they can work together. And that’s a lot of what this book is about, and specifically the teachings of plants and what we can learn from plants."

The club will spend each of the three months reading a portion of the book, then meet in person at Rogers Center, located at 2721 State Route 80 in Sherburne, to discuss what they've read. A virtual option is also available.

The meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 30 and May 28. On June 22, the club will take a trip to Onondaga Lake in Syracuse to discuss the final section of the book and the restoration work done on the area.

Members are responsible for acquiring a copy of the book, and can sign up by emailing ellen@friendsofrogers.org or calling the center at 607-674-4733 no later than April 15.

Rathbone said after registering, participants will receive a welcome email explaining which portion of the book needs to be read before the meeting, as well as a virtual meeting link.
