Baseball: Afton goes even in Cortland
CORTLAND - On Sunday, the Afton Crimson Knights baseball team continued its 2024 season in Cortland for a two-game series. Afton played non-league opponents Stockbridge Valley and McGraw, where they defeated Stockbridge and fell to McGraw. The Crimson Knights are off to a 2-1 start.
In game one against Stockbridge Valley, Afton's bats were fiery for the 15-1 win in four innings. Afton cashed in 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning to secure the victory.
The Crimson Knights got things started in the first, plating two early runs. Matt Carmen reached base on an error and then stole second base and went to third on a passed ball. He came in to score on Justin Reeves' RBI single. Reeves would also score during Tim Barnett's at-bat by stealing home.
Ryan Wright took the mound in the bottom half of the first with his team off to an early 2-0 start and gave up the lone run as the second batter he faced hit a triple to right field and scored on the next hit. Otherwise, Wright just gave up those two hits and kept the Cougars quiet the rest of the way. He also struck out seven batters.
