NORWICH — The "From Trash to Treasure" gallery will have its opening reception tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries at the Chenango Arts Council, located at 27 West Main Street in Norwich.
The show features discarded artworks salvaged by local collector John Antonowicz.
"It’s a show of found art. So it’s just pieces that people threw away, and John Antonowicz, he saw something about them and kind of rescued them from the trash," said Chenango Arts Council Administrative Assistant Mary Beth Miller. "So it’s really interesting how eclectic it all is. It’s all kinds of different pieces, and a little bit of 3D pieces, too. So it’s really very interesting."
Antonowicz said the art was discovered in many different places, from storage units to trash cans, but he felt the pieces were worth saving.
In his curator statement, he said, "I feel art is subjective and each piece here just needed a new home. I also greatly enjoy collecting, so of course, any excuse to collect free art is a reason to collect.
"These strange pieces came from a variety of places – some were from a storage unit with all contents going to the dump, while others were left beside trash bins. Whatever the case, these items slowly piled up in storage waiting to be loved again."
Miller said the reception is free and open to the public, and will include live music by Marc Funaro, thanks to grant funding provided by the Everett and Pearl Gilmour Foundation. Light refreshments from the Cottage Bakery will also be provided.
The gallery will be on display until May 10. Those who can't make the opening reception but would like to view the artwork can do so during the Arts Council's regular operating hours, or call 607-336-2787 to make an appointment.
"It should be a really fun time and a really interesting, eclectic show," said Miller.
Antonowicz said visitors may wonder why he chose to salvage some of the pieces, but he hopes they will find at least one where they wonder why it was ever thrown away.
