GREENE – On a misty Thursday night under the lights, the Greene Trojans flag football team hosted the visiting Johnson City Wildcats. Greene was able to pick up their first home win, even with the football being soaked, of the season with a 34-24 victory, their second official win in the program’s inaugural year.
Greene won the coin toss and deferred until the second half, which gave Johnson City the football to start the game. The Wildcats quickly handed the ball off, which happened on almost every offensive play, and scored to give themselves an early 6-0 lead. Not for long though as Greene answered on their second possession, following Molly Cornell snagging an interception and giving her team nice field position. Cornell found Allison James for the score to tie up the game at six. It would remain 6-6 until about five minutes left until halftime.
Audra Doll, who played in both the softball game and flag football game, ran from Greene’s 30 to the opposing 30 for the score, making a few spin moves past defenders. Greene took the lead and converted on the two-point conversion as the pass was bobbled for a second, but landed in the arms of Mya Leggett. Greene went up 14-6. Greene scored once again before the end of the first half. Audra Doll passed it off to Cornell, who went deep to James for the touchdown. It was James’ second of the night. Greene took a 22-6 lead at halftime after Ahraya Whitt caught the two-point conversion.
With a steady lead, Greene came back out and added another score on their first possession of the second half. Doll found Leggett, after she herself was short of the rushing touchdown, to go up 28-6. This time, Johnson City was able to answer back with two big hand-off touchdown on the next two possessions, cutting the lead to 28-18.
Both teams would score again as Greene’s Doll continued to have big run plays that landed her in the end zone with under 11 minutes to play. Johnson City scored to make the final score 34-24.
Greene (2-3) hosts Waverly for a mid-morning game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
