Track and Field: Local trackletes race in Sidney’s Doug Quinney Invite
SIDNEY – All local track and field teams were in action at Sidney’s Doug Quinney Invitational over the weekend.
The host school won the overall girls’ meet with Unadilla Valley in fourth, Bainbridge-Guilford in fifth, Norwich tied for 11th place, while the Oxford/Greene girls did not place. Oneonta won for the boys with B-G in fifth, Oxford/Greene in sixth, UV in seventh, and Norwich came in 10th place. There were over 20 schools competing on both sides, which also included Gilbertsville-Mount Upton.
B-G:
Girls:
The Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats girls’ track and field team continues to excel in their respective running events with remaining consistent in fielding.
For the team events, B-G took second in both the girls 4x400 and 4x800 events. A team of Ethne Degan, Maddie Ingham, Laila Williams, and Sage Pruskowski took second for the 4x400 as Ingham, Williams, Lalaenia Baldwin, and Vanessa Brazee finished behind UV in the 4x800 relay.
Degan would then go on to win the 1500 meter run with a top time of 4:50.99. GMU’s Andrea Favinger, who broke the school-record in a previous meet, finished third with time of 5:20.29. Degan’s teammate Ingham finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.07. Lalaenia Baldwin and Ruth Wilson set new personal bests in the 3000 meter run. Baldwin finished fifth with a new best time of 12:43.55 as Wilson ran it in 15:03.11, a new best for ninth place.
Makayla McCloud sprinted to a fifth place finish in the girls’ 100 meter dash with a time of 13.53 while Keelan Ammon continues to succeed in her prominent events. Ammon, an eighth grader, achieved new personal bests in both the 400 meter dash and in the pole vault event. She finished ninth in the 100 meter dash with a new best time of 1:06.64 while vaulting a new best 6-0.01, which put her in a three-way tie for sixth place.
Emily Sprow competed in both the high and triple jumps for the Bobcats. Sprow finished tied for seventh in the high jump with a jump of four feet, four inches. Her jump of 33-9.50 earned second place in the triple jump. Marissa Mayo achieved a new best throw of 74 feet, three inches in the discus throw, which was good for 15th place to round out the day for the B-G girls.
Boys:
The Bobcats boys started out with a sixth place team finish in the boys’ 4x800 with a team of Easton Porter, Brock Porter, Blake Tuttle, and Rowan Beasinger before Collin Dicks shined individually. Easton Porter also ran the 1600 meter run, where he took fifth place and set a new best time of 4:58.93.
Dicks picked up two top place finishes in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. He tied for first with Cobleskill’s runner in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.66 before Dicks accomplished a new personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 23.73 seconds. He took second in the long jump with a jump of 20-1.75 and finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 39 feet, three inches to complete his day.
Teammate Kevin Lang finished fourth in both the 100 and 400 meter dashes. Lang achieved a new personal best in the 400 meter dash with a best time of 53.76 seconds. Matthew Wombacker capped off the day for the B-G boys in the pole vault event, coming in a five-way tie for eighth place with a marking of eight feet exactly.
Norwich:
Girls:
The Norwich girls’ track and field team had a solid day, finishing tied for 11th with Laurens-Milford, picking up 18 team points. Layla Root, Kyra Brunick-Davis, and Brynley Ryan led the Norwich female runners. Root finished 12th in the girls’ 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:23.25 as Brunick-Davis ran for a ninth place finish in the 800 meters event. Brynley Ryan finished ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.28 seconds.
Emma Urgo competed in all three jumps as she finished third in the high jump, fourth in the triple, and 14th in the long jump. Teammate Josey Ryan set a new best jump in the long jump for second place with a jump of 15-0.75. Reagan Decker earned a seventh place finish in the triple jump (29-9.50).
Lara Tefft set a new best throw in the discus event with a throw of 84 feet, which was good for 10th place. Olivia Palmer finished in 14th with a throw of 76 feet, four inches. Tefft took seventh in the shot put event (27-8.50) to close out the scoring for the Norwich girls.
Boys:
The Norwich boys started out strong with a fourth place finish in the boys’ 4x100 with a team of Jonah Adams, Cameron Carnachan, Gabe Decker, and Spencer Root. The Purple Tornado also saw great speed from Caden Sutton, who earned the top finish in the 800 meter run with a new best time of 2:08.73. Nic Sutton earned 11th place in the same event. Caden ran for a second place finish in the 1600 meters, picking up a new best time of 4:45.62.
Connor Marshall set a new best time of 1:11.09 in the 400 meter hurdles for 14th place as Jack Barnes, Gabe Blenis, and Drew Westervelt finished strong in their respective fielding events. Barnes took seventh in the discus throw with a throw of 107 feet, 10 inches as Blenis followed in ninth place (105-11). Westervelt finished 10th in the shot put event with a throw of 37 feet, five inches.
Oxford/Greene:
Girls:
The Oxford/Greene girls did not place, but saw a strong performance from ninth grader Kayla Knapp. Knapp finished 10th in the 200 meter dash, setting a new best time of 29.62. Teammate Kayla Swift earned a new best time of 32.74 seconds for 27th place. Knapp also jumped to a 13th place finish in the long jump event with a jump of 13-2.75. Justina Parsons finished 19th with a jump of 12 feet, one inch.
Boys:
The Oxford/Greene boys’ team was stellar all-around, starting off with a second place team finish in the 4x800 relay, a third place finish in the 4x1400, and a fifth place finish in the 4x100. The 4x800 relay team consisted of Eddie Golden, Aiden Ives, Aiden Amin, and Gordon Smith, who finished second behind Oneonta. Smith had the lone win in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:11.27 individually as Anthony Bourn finished second in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Keegan Waltz and Lazarus Ludolph both competed in the 400 meter dash, where Waltz finished 10th with Ludolph directly behind him in 11th with a new best time of 56.65. Jacob Eroshevich tied for ninth place in the 200 meter dash, which he set a new personal best time of 25.37 seconds. Braeden Goerlich set his own personal best in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.95 seconds for fifth place.
Keegan Waltz earned a new best jump in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, four and a half inches as Aiden Amin finished 14th in the triple jump with a jump of 32 feet, nine inches.
UV:
Girls:
The Unadilla Valley girls continue to shine as a complete team, where they earned the top finish in the 4x800 to get things started. Addison Marinelli, Molly Gorrell, Madison Dix, and Natalya Schrag ran a best time of 10:47.36 to have a slight advantage over a tough B-G team. Dix competed in the girls’ 800 meter run individually, where she finished fourth with a time of 2:42.04.
Jaiden Schrag and Kalie Fernandez-Naughton led the seniors among their events. Schrag continues to strive in her prominent 100 meter hurdles event, picking up the top finish with a time of 16.52. She also finished second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.82. Fernandez-Naughton took fourth in the 200 meter dash and fifth in the 400 meter dash. She achieved a new best time in the 400 meter dash of 1:05.11. Molly Gorrell finished 13th in the same 400 meters event as her sister Gracie took second, ahead of all teammates. Fernandez-Naughton also finished fifth in the long jump and 12th in the shot put event.
Boys:
Jacob Prentice, Haywood Edwards, and Tucker Cattanach led the Storm boys to their seventh place finish overall. Prentice picked up two second place finishes in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes and earned fourth in the pole vault. He ran the 200 meter dash in 24.22 seconds, just behind B-G’s Dicks (23.73).
Edwards finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.79 as Cattanach was solid on his jumps. Cattanach finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 37 feet, seven and a quarter inches while jumping five feet, two inches in a three-way tie for ninth place.
All teams will be in action in their own separate meets in the upcoming week and weekend. Norwich is expected to compete in the Cahill Classic in Sauquoit this weekend. Oxford/Greene is attending the Deposit-Hancock meet along with Sidney, Deposit-Hancock, and Unatego this Wednesday, April 24, starting at 4:30 p.m. B-G will be hosting their own MAC meet on Wednesday with UV and Harpursville-Afton also attending.
