GREENE – The Greene Trojans baseball team welcomed neighboring Oxford for Monday’s MAC league match-up. Both teams, who had been struggling against other opponents, gave it their all in a tight game, which Greene ended up winning in the latter innings 6-2.
After two scoreless innings, Oxford got on the board and plated two runs in the third inning. One run came on Kyle Benjamin’s steal of home before another scored on a wild pitch. Oxford was held to just two hits off the bat of Degan Endress, but also reached on seven walks with three to Landen Olinski.
Greene answered back with a run in the bottom half of the third as Tristan Donnelly reached on an error and moved to second on the same error. He headed to third base on a passed ball and came into score on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Roth. Roth would pick up another RBI on a single in the bottom of the sixth, where the Trojans scored three runs. Parker Flanagan had a two-run single in the fifth inning and Ryan Milk went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
On the mound, Greene’s Carter Williamson started the game and went just two and a third innings, allowing the two earned runs on one hit, four walks, and struck out five batters. Lincoln Youngs finished the game in relief, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out eight batters in the win.
Oxford’s Kyle Benjamin and Nic Dodzweit split time on the mound with Dodzweit getting the start. Dodzweit allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, five walks, and struck out 10 batters. Benjamin allowed three runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out one batter in relief.
Greene (2-5) heads to Harpursville on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m while Oxford (1-5) looks to pick up another win against Harpursville this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
