CHENANGO COUNTY — There will be two Drug Take Back Day locations available on Saturday, April 27 where area residents can turn in their expired or unused over-the-counter, prescription, and pet medications, no questions asked.

One site will be located at the Bainbridge Firehouse, located at 22 West Main Street in Bainbridge from 9 a.m. to noon. Only medications may be dropped off; no syringes will be accepted.

The other will be in Norwich's East Park near the stage from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chenango Health Network Community Health Worker and Drug Free Community Coordinator Jessica Colley said residents can walk, ride a bike, or drive through East Park Place to drop off medications and syringes.

A Norwich Police Department officer will be there to collect the items, which will be placed into a sealed box. At the end of the Drug Take Back Day, the Chenango County Sheriff's Department will pick up the boxes and take them to be incinerated.

Additionally, Colley said "Drug Free Chenango Coalition Members will be handing out flyers with information about Drug Free Chenango and programs that Chenango Health Network offers."

Aside from Drug Take Back Days, Colley said unwanted medications can be turned in to the receptacle in the Norwich Police Department front lobby, located at 18 East Main Street in Norwich.

Additionally, the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) maintains a syringe receptacle on the south side of the Eaton Center, and runs a needle exchange in their Norwich office located at 33-39 Court Street.

Drug Take Back Days are sponsored in the spring and fall each year by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The last Drug Take Back Day in October 2023 saw 4,675 collection sites nationwide and 599,897 pounds – or 300 tons – of materials collected.

"You can turn in over-the-counter medications and prescription medications. No questions asked," said Colley. "This is a good opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet!"
