WAWARSING – The Galena Growlers, Norwich’s local National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) New York League team, traveled down to Wawarsing, NY for their third of five Spring 2024 season races – The Timber Ridge XC. We took 10 of our 15 team riders down to Lippman park. The High School course was a great 4.25-mile course whereas the Middle School course was one hill less totaling 3.14 miles in length. Varsity kids raced five laps, JV kids raced four laps, freshman raced three laps, where our middle school kids raced two laps on their respective courses.
We had one racer in sixth grade boys, three racers in seventh grade boys, two girls raced in the seventh grade girls’ race, one racer in Freshman boys, two riders in the JV Boys race and one racer in the JV Girls race. The team came away with three podium finishes; seventh grader Malakai Hagenbuch of Norwich finished second in his race, seventh grader Margaret Kemnah came home in fifth place in the girls race, and Alex Kemnah raced to a fourth place finish in the JV Boys race. Malakai, Alex and Margaret all had strong starts. Our training in/around the hills of Norwich prepared these kids well – with the single track trails, sweeping berms and big climbs. All three kept to their race strategy and rode very consistent laps. Alex had the toughest race, in the heat, with 4 x 4.25 mile laps for a 17 mile race. For the seventh grade girls, our two racers, Margaret and Mckenzie entered the woods second and third. They are both strong and work well together out in the woods. Halfway through the first lap, Mckenzie crashed and was out of the race. Margaret kept pushing hard and had her second podium for the year. In the seventh grade boy’s race, Malakai entered the woods in second and held that position over his two-lap race. He continues to get stronger and stronger and his consistency is paying off this year.
Lucas Scholl, racing the tough four-lap JV boys’ race, finished in 27th overall and was our number four points scorer for the team. Amon Oliver of Norwich raced in the Freshman boys’ race and rode to an excellent 16th place finish for his three-lap race. Amon was our number three points scorer for the team. John Gracey raced to sixth place in the seventh grade boys, along with his teammates Malakai and Carter Newton who rode to a 19th place finish. Elijah Mondics rounded out our boy riders by placing 10th in the sixth grade boy’s race.
The Growlers lone High School girl was Mia Currie, JV racer. Mia had a three-lap race at 4.25 miles per lap. Mia rode a great race, placing eighth overall. Mia’s a great rider, she’s tough and she conquered a tough and very challenging 12 plus miles. Mia was our Growlers second points scorer for the team on Sunday.
The weather was great, the course was fast and flowy and fun, and it was a great race day today, a great day to ride a bike in the woods. All the kids were challenged today, and our coaches are very proud of all the efforts given by our tough Growler kids. All our Growlers continue to get stronger and more confident as the season progresses. You can definitely tell we’re at Race three of the season, especially with our new, younger riders.
Every one of our riders is showing strength and confidence that wasn’t there just a few months ago. And they are all having fun (just don’t ask them if they are having fun at mile 12 in a race) – Having fun is one of our main goals – we want them all enjoying this sport throughout their lifetime.
Overall, the Growlers came away with a 12th place team finish on the day, scoring 1763 points overall. Team scorers were Alex Kemnah with 512 points, Mia Currie with 481 points, Amon Oliver with 390 points and Lucas Scholl with 380 points.
