Norwich Track competes in Class B Sectional Championship
ELMIRA –The Norwich Purple Tornado track and field teams traveled to Elmira on Wednesday for the Section IV, Class B championship. Union-Endicott took first for the girls' as Norwich came in fifth place. For the boys, Vestal won the sectional title while Norwich took third.
It was a great meet for Norwich athletes who continue to improve on times in their respective events.
Boys:
The Norwich boys' took third with 69 team points. Lucas Craddock was stellar again with his jumps, earning the first place finish in both the high and long jump. Richard Fuller joined in on the victory celebration with a first place finish in the 400 meter dash, achieving a new personal best time of 49.96 seconds. Fuller also took second in the 200 meter dash with a new best time of 22.87 seconds. Cameron Carnachan also competed in the 200 meters, where he himself achieved a new best time of 24.89 seconds for 11th place.
Carnachan finished 10th in the 100 meter dash with a new best time of 12.11 seconds with Jonah Adams behind him in 11th with his own personal best time of 12.23 seconds.
Gabe Decker was just short of the top finish in the 400 meter hurdles, completing the event in 57.52 seconds, behind Vestal's top 56.75. Connor Marshall also competed in the same event, where he finished 10th with a new best time of 1:08.71. Marshall also took fifth in the high jump with a jump of five feet, four inches and finished eighth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.04 seconds.
Caden Sutton won the 800 meter run with a new best time of 2:01.96 as Nic Sutton finished 10th in the 1600 meter run and Pat Mulwane took 14th in the 1600 meters.
Aside from Craddock's top jumps, Kaiden Vidler finished 10th in the long jump with a jump of 17-3.50. Gabe Blenis led the charge in the discus throw with a third place finish with a throw of 122 feet, four inches while Jack Barnes took sixth (114-3) and Dean Westervelt followed in seventh (106-0). Drew Westervelt earned fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, five inches.
Girls:
The Norwich girls' earned fifth place with 52 team points. The team kicked off with two second place finishes in the 4x100 and in the 4x800. A team of Layla Root, Brynley Ryan, Josey Ryan, and Emma Urgo completed the 4x100 in 53.32 seconds, behind Johnson City's 52.45. Annie Boland, Kyra Brunick-Davis, McKenzie Hagenbuch, and Emilia Pepe finished second to Union-Endicott in the 4x800. Boland then went on to run in the 800 meters event, where she took second with a new best time of 2:42.94. Brunick-Davis came in fourth place with her best time of 2:46.79.
Urgo competed in both the high and long jumps. She tied with four girls for the top spot in the high jump with a jump of four feet, eight inches. She took fifth in the long jump with a jump of 14-5.50. Reagan Decker finished 11th in the long jump with a jump of 13-3.25.
Sisters Brynley and Josey Ryan both participated in both the 100 and the 200 meter dashes. Josey picked up two fourth place finishes and achieved a new best time of 27.71 in the 200 meters. Brynley earned two seventh place finishes, where she set a new personal best time of 28.27 in the 200 meters as well.
McKenzie Hagenbuch and Laci Zieno both ran the 1500 meters, where Hagenbuch set a new best time of 5:40.99 for seventh place and Zieno came in 10th (7:31.90).
Norwich will now prepare for the state qualifiers meet on May 29 and 30 in Union-Endicott. Full results can be found on ny.milesplit.com.
