NORWICH — The Norwich Theater Company (NTCI) will be hosting their fifth annual A Toast to Broadway fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at the Colonia Theater ballroom, located at 35 South Broad Street in Norwich.
The show is a cabaret-style performance in which cast members intermingle with the audience while performing songs from "The King and I," "Rent," "Phantom of the Opera," "Porgy and Bess," "Les Miserables," "Bye Bye Birdie," "9 to 5," "Wonderland," and more.
"The performers are right in the audience spending time with them when they’re performing ... There is table seating as well as tier seating. Performers sit with, sing to, and mingle with the audience throughout the show in a relaxed, fun atmosphere," explained NTCI President Marty Kuhn. " The evening is divided into 2 'acts,' and there is plenty of time to chat with the performers and other audience members."
Tickets are $25 and on sale now for individuals 21 and older at Service Pharmacy in New Berlin, Norwich, and Sherburne; at the Chenango Arts Council; by visiting NorwichTheaterCompany.org; or by calling 607-244-3852. Tickets will not be sold at the door; they must be purchased in advance no later than June 1.
The evening will include light refreshments and desserts provided by Nina's Pizzeria, a cash bar, raffles, and a complimentary champagne toast at the end of the night, with non-alcoholic options available.
This year's cast includes Charles Ackerman, Terry Colf, Danielle Crozier, Scott Douglas, Steve Emmons, Cora Genter, Patti Kasmarcik, Isabel Mendoza, Laura Phillipson, Kiersten Skinner, Tara Tilley, and Mary Ann Whitney.
"We have an extremely talented cast. Some performers have been with Toast from the start, and some are new to NTCI and to Toast," said Kuhn. "It's wonderful to see them support each other and to grow as rehearsals continue. I am in awe of their talent, enthusiasm, and commitment."
Kuhn said the show includes a mix of solos, duets, small group numbers, and ensemble performances, with an emphasis on highlighting cast members' strengths as singers.
"Everybody does at least one solo, and we then have people doing duets, trios, group numbers," she said. "We want everybody to be able to perform to their best potential. So we’re not going to put a soprano into a low alto song or give something to somebody that’s not a solid piece for them."
"In the past we have originally had a song for somebody and it just was not working for them, and so we worked with them and found a different song that did showcase their talent and make them comfortable, and the audience responds to that."
A Toast to Broadway is the Norwich Theater Company's largest fundraiser of the year, and sponsored by Nina's Pizzeria and Restaurant. NTCI is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit theater company that relies on community support to bring quality theater and educational experiences to Norwich and the surrounding communities.
