GREENE – Join in on the family fun and support the Blessings in a Backpack Program while visiting the Touch-A-Truck event held by The Greene Lions Club.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at the Greene Lions Club Park located at Lions Park Lane.

The Greene Lions Club Touch-A-Truck Committee Chair Christopher Kurz said they are holding their second semi-annual Touch-A-Truck event and have invited about 95 entities such as construction companies, local farmers, businesses, Emergency Response Entities, and more and expect to hit about 50-60 items to touch.

Kurz said some vehicles can be unlocked and chaperoned children may climb right in to feel what it’s like to be behind the wheel of their favorite machine.

“We try only to allow kids into equipment that has supervision,” he said. “We try to be as respectful as possible since much of it needs to be back to work either that afternoon or Monday morning.”

He said the vehicles’ engines will not be running.

Kurz explained admission is free but donations are appreciated as they are looking to raise monetary funds for local school district’s Blessings in a Backpack programs.

“The program is designed to help feed our school children who are at risk of having little or no food either in the evenings or on the weekends,” said Kurz.

“Our plan is to collect monetary donations at the entrance to the park and then divide the funds amongst the area school districts,” he said.

Blessings in a Backpack reviews its standard menu with a nutritionist annually to make sure the food is kid-friendly, nutritious, non perishable and easy-to-prepare.

The program will reach its 14th year of participation in the nationally recognized program. Their goal is to serve 100 students universal pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Kurz hopes for a huge turnout this year and expects between 800 to 1,000 attendees.

“The last time we held this event, more than 500 people attended,” he said.

“We sent out invitations to everyone that participated back in 2022,” said Kurz. “We also sent flyers home with kids in local schools from Pre-K thru 5th grade as well.”

This year they expanded their invitations to include Afton, Bainbridge, Greene, Oxford, Whitney Point, Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, and Harpursville Central Schools.

“Unfortunately, there were two schools that didn’t feel it was a community event so they didn’t want to promote it in their schools,” he added.

Concessions will be available and the funds support the Greene Lions Club.

If you have something cool you want to show off, participation is free. Call or text Lion Christopher Kurz at 607-644-5206 or email Ckurz@Barrettpaving.com
