NORWICH — The Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport, located at 6390 State Highway 12 North in Norwich, will be hosting the annual Chenango County Airport Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, where attendees can learn all about the local airport and aviation fields.

"Airport Day is a community day around the airport where we try to bring up people to look at the airport, see what we have going on, and look at all the different aviation type displays that we have around the county," said Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport Administrator Shane Butler. "We’ve got a lot of different things for people to see and do at the airport."

Airport Day is free to attend and free to park. Butler said all are welcome to attend, and aviators are welcome to fly in their planes, helicopters, and other aircraft.

This year's event will include displays, activities, and education for all ages. In attendance will be DCMO BOCES with their Career Destinations program and Air Patrol program, Mohawk Valley Community College with information on their aviation programs, the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, a bounce house for kids, Tri-County Flight Civil Air Patrol, the Iroquois Soaring Association out of Hamilton will be returning with their gliders, and Butler said there may be a flight simulator.

"You sit kind of in a pilot’s chair and there’s a big screen in front of you, and it’s almost like a computer game where you’re flying a plane around an area," he explained.

Food will be also available for purchase, including donuts and breakfast from the Donut Hut and Bakery, chicken barbecue from the Columbus Public House, and hot dogs from J Panzo Dogs.

Those looking for even more excitement this Airport Day can also register for flights on the Vultee BT-13 Valiant, a World War II-era basic trainer aircraft built by Vultee Aircraft for the United States Army Air Corps, and later US Army Air Forces. Flights are $299 per person, and last about 25 to 30 minutes. To register, call 716-830-3051.

Kids aged 8 to 17 can also soar through the sky on a free Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1204 Young Eagle Flight.

"It’s a volunteer organization dedicated to aviation, and they have their own personal planes or ones that they’ve rented or leased from another organization. They’re all experienced pilots," said Butler.

Parent or guardian permission is required for Young Eagle Flights. To register ahead of time, contact Dave Dibbell at 607-373-9195 or dibbeld@frontiernet.net. or register at Airport Day. Young Eagle Flights are also available for free year round.

Butler said some displays and demonstrations at Airport Day are weather permitting.

"We’re rain or shine, but some of the displays might not be there if it’s raining," he said. "Or they might start a little bit later, too. So like EAA with Young Eagles Flights, if it’s still foggy in the morning and they just can’t get out there, they’ll still do it as long as the weather clears up later."

The Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport also provides educational experiences throughout the year. Butler said they often host schools and local organizations to teach about the airport and aviation fields. Recently DCMO BOCES students visited for National EMS Week, where they learned about LifeNet and Chenango County EMS and fire departments, Valley Heights Christian Academy visited for a day, and a 4-H group will be attending in a few weeks.

"Whenever the community or community groups want to see the airport, we’re glad to give tours and we’re happy to show them and learn about the airport," said Butler.

The airport is also in the process of receiving several updates. Butler said they just wrapped up construction on the taxiways, which included brand new pavement, permanent striping, new LED lights, and new LED signs.

They'll also be getting a new weather station, which helps pilots flying into and out of the airport; they received a grant to purchase new snow removal equipment, such as a snowblower and plow truck; and they've started designing a renovation of the jet hangar and admin building.

"We’re trying to make it look nicer and hopefully attract some new businesses and expand a little bit," said Butler.

Visitors to this year's Airport Day can check out the finished improvements while enjoying the many aviation demonstrations and displays.

Chenango County Airport Day is sponsored by NBT Bank, Principle Design and Engineering, Commerce Chenango, Colliers Engineering and Design, Golden Artist Colors, and C&S Companies.
