SHERBURNE – It was a friendly local match-up between the Sherburne-Earlville and Oxford PONY League teams on Monday evening. After a light rainstorm throughout the day, the teams were blinded by the sunshine, marking a perfect night for baseball. S-E picked up their first win of the season with an 11-2 victory. S-E scored nine unanswered runs after Oxford tied the game at two a piece in the top of the second inning.
Oxford jumped on board first as Conner Dunagan led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and stole two bases. He came in to score off an error. S-E also got on the board early in the bottom of the first, but with two runs. One run scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch before Nolan Sigman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in a run.
Oxford tied the game in the top of the second inning as Blake Barrows, who hit a single to center field, stole second as he got into a pickle with the defense trying to throw him out, but he was safe. Barrows made it to third on a wild pitch before scoring on the next wild pitch. Ben Sheridan also had a base hit in the same inning and made it to third base on an error and stolen base, but failed to score as S-E’s Lucas Newman fired up on the mound.
Newman would give up one more hit to Nic Dodzweit in the top of the fourth inning, but otherwise, kept Oxford quiet while the offense flourished. Newman finished with 11 strikeouts and struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning to end his outing.
S-E’s offense scored 11 runs on six hits. Colin Pudney had two hits as Haden Holcomb reached base three of four times with two walks and a single and scored three runs. Deagan Knochenmus had a single in the third inning and drove in a run in the fifth inning on a groundout. Kaiden Briggs and Cooper Thorpe also had a hit in the win.
Newman and Sigman split time on the mound for S-E with Newman going six strong innings, allowing two runs on three hits, one walk, and had 11 strikeouts. Aside from walking Dodzweit in the top of the seventh, Sigman had a good finish to the game.
Blake Barrows, Eddie Ingraham, and Uri Tracy split time on the mound for Oxford, where the trio combined with five strikeouts, including one each from Barrows and Tracy as Ingraham struck out three batters through three and two-thirds.
S-E (1-1) hosts Norwich on Wednesday at 6 p.m. while Oxford (1-2) heads to Unatego on Thursday at 6 p.m.
