New York limits firework usage, offers safety tips

NORWICH — Watching a firework display is exciting, exhilarating, and a sure way to enjoy a graduation or holiday while oohing and ahing over the brilliance of exploding colors in the sky. Yet, each year, injuries and most recently deaths, are caused by the usage of fireworks.


“First and foremost, New York State (NYS) only allows those permitted handlers to purchase and utilize fireworks such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, spinners, and aerial devices,” said City of Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino. “ These type devices should be left to the licensed professionals.”

He said it is however legal for the general public to purchase and use sparkling devices. He said those include ground-based or handheld devices that produce showers of colored sparks or colored flame, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke.
