PONY League Baseball: S-E swept by Edmeston in doubleheader

SHERBURNE – With the regular season winding down in the Otsenango PONY League, the Sherburne-Earlville summer ball team made up its series with Edmeston on Friday night. The teams played two five inning games, which Edmeston took both victories to move ahead behind Oxford in the standings.
In game one, Edmeston defeated S-E on a walk-off misplay in the bottom of the fifth with the game tied at two. Edmeston won 3-2 and had plated a run in the first inning before S-E tied and went ahead. S-E scored their only two runs in the top of the second inning off bases-loaded walks. Edmeston had tied the game in the bottom of the third and went on to win in the fifth.
S-E was held to only one hit in the first game as Haden Holcomb hit a single to right field in the top of the fourth inning. S-E also reached base six times with walks as Nolan Sigman and Lucas Newman both walked twice. Holcomb, Tomek Jusianiec, and Kaiden Briggs each stole two bases of the team’s total of eight.
Newman pitched four and a third innings, allowing the three runs, two earned, on six hits, one walk, and struck out eight batters.
Game 2:
S-E dropped the second game by a score of 9-4, but were able to hit the ball a little better off the opposing pitchers. S-E scored four runs on four hits. Nolan Sigman led the team with a hit and two RBIs. Colin Pudney, Jay Tackabury, and Lucas Newman each contributed with a hit in the loss. Pudney led the team with four stolen bases while Jusianiec stole two bases and Cooper Thorpe stole one of seven total stolen bases. Jason Daring drew two of the team’s eight walks on the night.
Sigman and Daring split time on the mound, where Sigman allowed nine runs, three earned, on five hits, four walks, and struck out five batters through four innings. Daring worked a scoreless fifth inning, only giving up a walk.
S-E sits at 4-5 with one final game to make up as they will resume their suspended game against Norwich tonight (Monday) at 6 p.m. The game is tied at two and resumes in the bottom of the fourth inning at the Norwich field. Otsenango PONY League playoffs begin with quarterfinals on Thursday, July 25.
