NEW BERLIN – On Tuesday, the Unadilla Valley Storm PONY League team hosted Cooperstown for the final regular season game of the summer. Cooperstown shutout UV 11-0 through five innings.
Cooperstown scored all 11 runs in the top of the second inning off a struggling Storm defense. Despite the deficit, the defense stayed together and finished off the game strong, including defensive assists by Nolan Lewis at shortstop, making a few line outs, which one turned into a double play. Catcher Zayne Dibbell also caught a runner stealing third with help from teammate and third baseman Urijah Drake.
UV was held hitless up until the bottom of the fourth inning when Nolan Lewis hit a two-out single to center field. UV also had a base runner in the bottom of the second when Zack Welch reached on an error and stole second base with two outs, but failed to score.
Lewis and Declan Potter split time on the mound for the Storm. Lewis got the start and only went one full inning. He allowed nine earned runs on two hits, six walks, and was able to pick up one strikeout. Declan Potter went the final four innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, two walks, and struck out four batters in the loss.
UV (3-5) will have one final game of the summer season as they take on a non-league 15 and under Massachusetts team. The game will be held Sunday, July 28 at 11:30 a.m. from Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
