CHENANGO COUNTY — The Place, The Pulse Coalition, Tobacco Free Zone, and the City of Norwich Youth Bureau have come together to offer a free "Floating Movie Night" for Chenango County teens at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20 at Kurt Beyer Pool, located at 91 Cortland Street in Norwich.

The event is open to Chenango County youth aged 12 to 18, and will include snacks; games, including ladder ball, can jam, corn hole, and ring toss; substance and tobacco use prevention information provided by Tobacco Free Zone and The Pulse Coalition; various activities; a raffle; and an 8 p.m. screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

"So at 6:30 we’re going to open it up and we’ll have can jam and corn hole, and a couple other games and activities, along with some snacks, and every activity that they participate in they get a ticket, and that ticket they can put in for a raffle to win something of their choice," explained Chenango Health Network SUD Coordinator Jessica Colley. "That’ll go until about 8 o’clock and then we’ll start getting into the pool. Hopefully, if the weather cooperates. And then hopefully we can float and watch 'Pirates of the Caribbean.'"

The organizations have purchased and collected donations of pool floats and noodles for teens to use in the pool while they watch the movie, and lifeguards will be on duty as well, courtesy of the City of Norwich Youth Bureau.

"We just want to promote it to the whole county. It’s for any of the teens," said Colley. "[We're] just trying to have something fun, because we hear a lot that there’s not a lot to do for kids. So hopefully this can continue years down the road if it works out."

Registration is preferred but not required to attend the event. To pre-register, scan the QR code provided on The Place and Chenango Health Network Facebook pages. Contact The Place at 607-336-9696 with any questions.

In the event of unfavorable weather, the event will be moved to Thursday, August 22. Keep an eye on The Place and Chenango Health Network Facebook pages for any changes.

Colley said this event was made possible through community support from various organizations, businesses, and individuals.

"The whole event is really a huge community effort, so that way teens have something that’s substance free, and a free event to just let kids be kids," she said.

Guernsey Memorial Library is providing the use, set up, and take down of their movie screen and equipment; Commerce Chenango has provided a monetary donation as well as the donation of advertising; Tobacco Free Zone bought the movie licensing and is providing snacks; Walmart donated items for the event; Serenity Hobbies provided a donation; and officers with the City of Norwich Police Department will be on site to meet the kids.

"Just to help keep an eye out, and it’s good for the kids to have a good relationship with them, too, and see that they’re coming out to the fun things," said Colley.

Anyone who would like to provide a donation for the event or volunteer can contact Colley at jessicac@chenangohealth.org for more information.

The Pulse (Preventing Use, Loss, and Stigma, with Education) Coalition, formerly known as Drug-Free Chenango, includes representatives from all areas of the Chenango County community, and aims to implement training, policy changes, and further action to prevent substance use in Chenango County youth.

"We are also a part of the coalition, we're on the steering committee, and we’re really doing the same thing that The Pulse is doing: we’re providing constructive, substance-free opportunities for youth in the community. So it just really made sense that we were partnering," said The Place Executive Director Sharon Vesely. " Jess [Colley] and I talked about partnering and having this opportunity, and it just seemed to fit."

"Any chance I can get to work with the teens is a big deal for me," added Colley. "So this opportunity to partner with Sharon [Vesely] and do something bigger, it’s really important."

Anyone interested in joining The Pulse Coalition can contact Colley at jessicac@chenangohealth.org for more information. She said they are especially seeking small business owners to join the organization. More information on the coalition can be found at ThePulseCoalition.org.

The goal of Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins, and Chenango Counties is "to foster environments supportive of policies that reinforce the tobacco-free norm in our communities."
